We live in an entangled world. Fungi and algae form lichens, symbiotic communities in which new properties emerge that enable them to penetrate all regions of the earth. Similarly, we can understand the current climatic, economic, and political crises as complex systems reinforcing each other: The ongoing cost of living crisis is a consequence of the pandemic, the Ukraine war, energy policies, and supply chain shortages.

In this course, we aim to investigate interconnections between human and non-human actors, futures and pasts, technologies, capital, politics, and the environment. We'll then develop non-linear narrative forms to communicate these complex interdependencies and work experimentally with data, images, film, and sound.

You'll create interactive video installations in small groups around a self-selected theme. By taking this course you’ll be introduced to video and audio production, data visualisation, narration, complex systems, and prototyping.

For the development of the video installations, we will use an interface developed at the FH Potsdam in the context of a research project, in which network visualisations can be created and linked to film and audio media.

This course will be taught in English. Projects can be developed in English or German. Prior experience in working with data/video/audio is not required.
