WERKSCHAU!

This course is about visual identity and applied design for Werkschau 2025. The goal of this class is to develop a strong design that can represent an exhibition showcasing the university and students' work, and be applied across various formats - from print media like posters to digital media such as social media and animations.

WORKSHOPS

This course began with a workshop on designing protest posters. Through various and experimental design methods, we explored how to design powerful posters that can easily capture people's attention and make information easily understood.

1 - DESIGN PHASE

Initially, I focused on 'connectivity' as the keyword for the main graphic to promote our school and students' work exhibition. I believed that communication plays a crucial role in the design department - students giving feedback to each other, discussing ideas about their work with professors - and that this communication connecting everyone leads to better work outcomes. Therefore, I set keychains as the design motif to visualize connectivity and created images using keychains I owned.

However, I received feedback that it was too complex, and I myself questioned whether this truly symbolized a work exhibition well. So I worked to design an intuitive poster with strong thematic focus that would be easy to understand.

Through Lotti's ping-pong workshop and various feedback sessions, I worked to create a poster that would make Werkschau more visible and present information clearly and easily.

I wanted to apply the experimental and analog methods from the protest poster workshop to my Werkschau project as well. Therefore, I created typefaces using keychains and also worked on posters using purely digital methods, completely excluding analog approaches.

2 - DESIGN PHASE

After the Zwischenpräsentation, I felt the importance of establishing a clear concept. Through Susanne's feedback, I worked to remove unnecessary graphics and create a more visible poster. Through this process, I was able to gain an opportunity to think once again about selection and focus.

1. [Play of Design] Concept: This idea interprets students' assignments and work as a form of play or game, because there are no 'wrong answers' in play. Similarly, in the design process, students explore various possibilities without fear of failure. Moreover, play is more fun when shared with others than when alone. This parallels how students gain inspiration from each other's ideas and grow to higher levels through healthy competition. Therefore, I viewed the act of students working joyfully as being as free as children's play, as challenging as games, and as exploratory as experiments. To express this concept, I used graphics with a playful and free atmosphere. For the typography, I also used Gotham Rounded to maintain the playful mood.

2. [Keychain] Concept: The keychains used in the poster's background symbolize the exchange and interest among students, as well as the connectivity and interaction with visitors who come to Werkschau. Just as keychains connect objects to each other, exhibitions and design also connect people to people, and through this communication, they develop better growth in the creative process.

ANIMATION

In the animation design, I also made that information would be clear and easy to read. Therefore, I removed unnecessary and repetitive information from the elements used in the poster and adapted the design to suit each medium well. I maintained the playful mood through light floating and rotating movements.

ORIENTIERUNGSSYSTEM

At Laumplan, to continue the poster's witty and playful concept, it was printed in color on A3 Munken. Care was taken to ensure that each design would stand out even when the paper was folded.

STICKER

The arrows were positioned to point toward the door of Haus D leading to the entrance, helping to focus attention on it. Additionally, images featuring the main graphics and typography were placed on large windows to generate interest from people.

A6-sized stickers were produced. They were planned to be packaged in vinyl, and the exhibition is promoted through the top logo section of the sticker that reads 'Werkschau.' The stickers are centered around the graphics used in the posters.

Persönliche Reflexion

Creating a concept for an exhibition was my first experience and it was very interesting and enjoyable. I think I learned a lot about poster design that works more effectively. The experimental analog challenges through the resistance poster workshop were particularly impressive. I was able to gain inspiration from methods I had never tried before and from seeing the diverse works of other fellow students, which was very intersting.

I had always struggled with simplifying things after making them overly complex, but through this process, I gained great insight by repeatedly considering and receiving advice on how to make things work better.

Above all, through the classes, I gained various learnings including different processes and design procedures, as well as methods for applying them to other media.
