How much does 'made in italy' food production cost the environment?

Problem

The project was born with the intention of reflecting on one of the main characteristics that define Made in Italy and Italy itself: food, considered almost sacred to Italians. The aim is to examine the possible environmental and other problems linked to this fundamental component of our culture.

Start

The initial phase of the project focused on obtaining a general overview of the problem by identifying the main environmental impacts related to production and transportation. Issues such as greenhouse gas emissions from transport, soil erosion, and drought were highlighted.

Subsequently, we examined how large-scale distribution influences and regulates the market, imposing unsustainable demands on both producers and quality standards. After conducting an internal analysis, we expanded our focus to consider how this problem also affects Italy, particularly in terms of export practices and the resulting overproduction of food. Finally, it became clear that the Italian government is not taking adequate action, leaving the situation largely unaddressed.

Problem Focus

To thoroughly analyze the issue, understand its internal dynamics, and develop a solution, I decided to focus on a specific food item. And what better choice than the tomato, an essential element in our cuisine and culture (yes, I am Italian) and one of the most widely produced in our country?

As a first step, I examined tomato production in Italy, which is among the top five producers globally, and identified the main cultivation areas within the country. Next, I delved into the various production methods and the environmental issues associated with them, such as high water consumption, soil erosion, and pesticide use.

Ethical aspect

An issue closely tied to environmental concerns, particularly in the southern regions of tomato production, is the role of the mafia and illegal labor practices. These systems control cultivation and production, exploiting thousands of workers, many of whom are migrants with no other options.

Friction map

Subsequently, all stakeholders were confronted with the aim of identifying their conflicts and interactions.

Afterwards, the steps and interactions of tomato production were also explored in a system map to highlight the problems.

Solution

After the analysis phase, we move on to solving the problem by identifying four main solutions and selecting the most feasible ones for us. Additionally, we review existing case studies as references.

Output

How can we solve the problem with an awareness campaign if we Italians do not act first? Showing the situation abroad could be a solution, but how can we not agree with a typical Italian grandmother who scolds us in the kitchen?

Conclusions

With this project I tried to tell the story of an Italy that is too often hidden and ignored. I wanted to explore and highlight the environmental and social issues related to our food production, looking for a solution that could surprise you when you least expect it.

I would like to thank the course and the professors for their support and for giving me the opportunity to tackle this issue. It was a stimulating and engaging course that allowed me to acquire new tools and knowledge, enriching my Erasmus experience to the fullest.
