In this course, we were encouraged to learn how Augmented Reality works, How far AR's capability is now, and what possibilities we could create. We learned and worked with various tools; this page is my learning diary.
We started the course by approaching the surface of augmented reality by practicing and trying to create a poster with adobe aero. We were encouraged to create some typography vector and transform it into the AR tool in this course.
We used photoshop to create the typography as a vector and put it to use on Adobe Aero. We transformed it from vector form into 3d Typoghahy. as a result. We created a simple 3d typography poster in AR.
By now, we have learned how to use adobe aero. In this part of the course, we were given some freedom to create AR posters, so we could do whatever we pleased. As a result, it has to use the tools and the workflow of the course, so I decided to create this poster.
I tried to use blender to create and scale the 3d models, but I had a ton of problems since adobe aero is still in its beta phase. Most of the problem was also caused by my devices.
I use a windows based laptop, but my phone to test the poster is ios based phone. I concluded that the difference in how each Operation system works affects the functions.
In this part of the course, we learned how to do photogrammetry. Photogrammetry is a fun technique to experience with. We scan things we want to scan, everything possible, and what we scan will turn into 3d models, which we can use for further experiments.
This part is interesting because I never knew such tools existed. Reality Composer is a fun tool to experiment with. In this part, we had to recreate domino effects using 3d objects inside the reality composter.
What's excellent about reality composer is that the physics, it can be applied directly, the accuracy could be considered excellent, it doesn't have problematic bugs, and the only minus is the limitation on the file sizes, it is limited by 25 MB.
The other fantastic factor is that you can export your project as USDZ and send it to your friends, so they can play with the project you have created.
Spark AR, now called Meta Spark, is the tool responsible for all those AR FIlter out there for social media such as Instagram and Facebook. This tool is amazing. It is capable of doing many things to help enhance our creative ideas.
For the practice, I decided to make this filter in which if you smile, you get rejected to go into the club. If you're grumpy, nothing will happen, and you pass to go inside the club.
I had a ton of fun experimenting with this tool, but I have explored more since then. There is also an AR tool for TikTok, and It's called Effect House. Not as impressive as meta spark, but it keeps developing.
For the final project, I decided to create motion design poster series. The posters' contents or concepts differ from this course's main points, so I won't discuss them. All I want to talk about is the capability of AR. and how I found the best one for my project.
I tried to use Spark AR & Adobe Aero to bring my poster to life. My idea was that the 3d Model I created would pop out of the poster without losing the realistic shader and its quality. Still, it is impossible for a moment due to the size limitation from SparkAR & Adobe Aero.
Through trial and failure, I decided to use Artivive. Of course, in the end, my idea could not be realized due to the limitation of the program's capabilities, so I decided to use Artivive. This doesn't mean Artivive solved my problems. In the end, I decided to render out the animation of the 3d models and apply it as a video on the poster. And Artivive does the job better than others.
This course was helpful for those who want to learn augmented reality. And there is tons of valuable practice and information about augmented reality, and we practice with many tools.
All the theories are also solid in understanding how augmented reality works. The freedom was great, I hope this class will get bigger, and I hope the FHP provides us with all the extra tools to practice better.
Overall thank you to Ricardo and all the students involved in this course. It was fun and beneficial for us who want to get involved in this augmented reality world.
